This book is a culmination of 36 years of music I have written. This is not all of the music I’ve written but the ones I felt that represented major turning points in my writing. The way that I have presented the material here is very much like that of the original “Fake books” – a single staff with chord symbols above the written melody below. It was my intent to leave out bass parts on certain songs and leave it up to the performer to create their own bass lines. Granted, I did write down a few bass parts for certain tunes but in essence left out most of my created bass parts so that the performer could draw on their own ideas for those parts. My only other note per song was to establish the “feel” by denoting “Funk” or “Straight Eight Feel”, etc. I encourage you to refer to the original recordings from my CDs whenever possible as a starting point. Most of all – have fun!

I’ve had the pleasure to work with Michael for the last 12 years or so and we’ve developed a little musical dialog for ourselves over the years. Through Michael, I’ve had the honor to work with some fine players. Neils happens to be one those guys who’s just awesome….

LAFAYETTE, CALIFORNIA, October 3, 2011 — Temple Isaiah today announced that it will host a special concert in honor of the 10th annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days (www.danielpearlmusicdays.org) to be held Sunday afternoon, October 23, 2011 at 2:00 PM at its hilltop sanctuary in Lafayette, California. Admission is free and open to the public. Temple Isaiah is located at 3800 Mount Diablo Blvd., with its entrance on Risa Road.
To commemorate the October birthday of journalist/musician Daniel Pearl, who was abducted and killed by extremists in Pakistan in 2002, musicians of all genres will participate in concerts worldwide and use the universal language of music to spread a message of hope and to unite people across geographical and cultural borders in a quest for a better world.
The October 23 Lafayette concert will feature performances by an array of artists of different musical styles, as well as remembrances from friends who knew Pearl. Performers include Vocolot (www.vocolot.com), the award-winning women’s a cappella ensemble; Rivka Amado (www.rivkamusic.com), a talented singer of Ladino music – the songs of the Jewish Spanish tradition; Gerry Tenney & the Lost Tribe, bluegrass; Robbie Dunbar, multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter; Edo Castro (www.edocastro.com), bassist, composer, and recording artist with Passion Start Records; Michael Tobin, San Francisco singer/songwriter who co-composed several songs with Pearl; and Michael Gill (https://www.therecordlabel.net/progressive-rock/michael-gill), pianist and composer of progressive music.
Also appearing will be singer/guitarists Achi Ben Shalom, Fran Avni, Cantor Rita Glassman and Joel Siegel; guitar synthesizer player Doron Rotem; percussionist Katja Cooper; singer Callie Lou Thomas; and other special guests.
The concert is organized by Michael Gill, a childhood friend of Pearl’s who has put on similar events during the past ten years. Said Gill, “It is a bittersweet experience to prepare this concert. It has been ten years since Danny’s passing and he is missed by those who knew him and by people who never met him but were nevertheless impacted by his courage and humanity. I am honored that so many remarkable musicians will give their time to make the October 23 concert a very uplifting afternoon and I am indebted to Temple Isaiah for hosting this special event.”
The Daniel Pearl Foundation was formed in 2002 in memory of journalist/musician Daniel Pearl to promote the ideals that inspired his life and work. The Foundation is active domestically and internationally to promote dialogue and understanding, to counter cultural and religious hatred, to encourage responsible and balanced journalism, and to promote peace through music.
“At the 10th anniversary of Daniel Pearl World Music Days, we reaffirm our conviction that Danny’s music has not been silenced and that, standing united, humanity will triumph and harmony will prevail,” said Judea and Ruth Pearl, parents of Daniel Pearl and Co-Founders of the Foundation.

An impressionistic, tech-urban jazz landscape; a story within a story; a tale of tension and grace.
The multi-faceted artistry of Bay Area bassist sensation and composer, Edo Castro, elevates the sounds that come from his unique, multi-stringed basses, both fretted and fretless, into a palate from which intricate compositions flow. Castro describes his newest release, Sacred Graffiti, as a tapestry of emotive impressions. “A musical Journal if you will,” he explains, “In my day-to-day travels I’ve noticed what may be our modern day cave paintings – signs; scribbles on walls; imprints in the sidewalk; bumper stickers, etc. – all immersed within a cacophony of audible textures.” These dynamic visuals have been given auditory life as Castro delivers intricate urban jazz arrangements interspersed with immersive soundscapes where the tangible tension between inner and outer worlds is encompassed by grace. Hello my Friends,
This time of year is my favorite time of year but it’s not because of the holidays. I love the changes of the seasons, the leaves turning brilliant hues of red and orange, the rain, the dark clouds, the cold brisk air and yes the snow.
It’s a time of introspection and contemplative ideals to germinate, with intentions to take seed and blossom in the spring. I can feel the winter solstice blanket darken the fabric of my spirit, the fabric of my existence. It is a time to hibernate a life that has weathered the past year.
We’ve all gone through a lot this year and it’s not all so promising with the economic world downturn, The H1N1 Flu, constant threats of violence close and far from our homes, people losing their home, their jobs and their dignity. Indeed it is a very dark time, I would be a fool not to say that I’m scared or nervous.
If there’s any real comfort in all this, I’m not alone in my fear and that in its self is comforting. Here we share a common thread that goes back since our awareness of self and our existence: we’re still afraid of the unknown. The ultimate boogey man.
Perhaps that’s why we have holidays in the darkest part of the year. To give us a sense of hope and that no matter what it is we’re struggling with now, it will be better the next day, the next week, the next month or the next year.
In this time of darkness, whatever we came into this economic turmoil with, looming health issues, or whatever it is this year you are struggling with, I wish for all of us to emerge with strength, dignity and hope, so that we can turn around our personal struggles and be fearless in uncertain times.
To all of you – Whatever it is you celebrate this time of year –

Currently, Passion Star Records’ artist Edo Castro is recording & mixing his latest project at Skywalker Sound in Nicasio, California with Ray Cooper as producer. This will be his second release on the Passion Star Records label due out later this year. It was an amazing day featuring Passionstar’s Ray Cooper/Producer, Leslie Ann Jones & Team/Engineering and a variety of musicians including Erik Lindquist/guitar, Alex Aspinall/drums, Dan Zinn/Sax, Jonathan Moe/drums, percussion. Edo is currently working on his 3rd Release with special guest bassist David Friesen, Michael Manring and Percy Jones. Edo is also planning a Bass project involving Stew McKinsey and Yves Carbonne.
